Copycat: Lana Del Rey
If I could trade faces with anyone, Lana Del Rey would probably be at the top of my list. The sultry singer is known for her infamous lips almost as much for her lackluster SNL performance (although I thought it was pretty good, but whatever). Del Rey burst onto the scene with her first single, “Video Games” and has since become a huge star. Her shy demeanor, controversial lyrics and gorgeous hair make her a favorite of mine. Lana is known for two particular looks- the glamorous curls and pouty lips of her “Born to Die” days and her more recent, teased bouffant and thick liner phase. Here’s how to steal each one of her looks.
HAIR– To get Lana’s gorgeous, full waves, first prep with a thickening cream, like Living Proof Full Thickening Cream. This creates the illusion of full hair and gives the curls their luscious bounce. Use a medium-to-wide barrel curling iron (T3 Singlepass Twirl 1.25 Inch Curling Iron) to curl pieces away from the face. Brush through curls carefully at the end for fuller curls instead of Shirley Temple ringlets. Apply a hairspray (Bumble And Bumble Spray De Mode) to hold the curls and slide on a flower crown.
EYES– For Lana’s eyes, darken your brows with a product like Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow to make them stand out. Then apply a light, creamy nude shadow with just a hint of shimmer (Bareminerals Eyecolor). Line eyes with a thin stroke of black liner (Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner) and apply thick coats of a heavy-duty mascara (Dior Diorshow Mascara) for big lashes.
FACE & LIPS– To get Lana’s porcelain skin, avoid the tanning beds and horrible, shimmery bronzers and opt for a light cream foundation to even out your skintone (Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation) and a pinky-peach blush like the popular Nars Blush in “Orgasm”. Finally, make your lips look pouty by applying a light pink gloss, such as MAC’s “Oyster Girl” Lipglass onto the center of your lips.
HAIR– To get Lana’s voluminous pouf (seriously- HOW does she do it?), you’ll need a few products and some time on your hands. Shower with a volume shampoo (such as Ojon Volume Advance Volumizing Shampoo) and then apply a volumizer like Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray right out of the shower. Blow dry hair with a round brush, then tease the crap out of it with a teasing brush. Once your pouf is high enough, spray with a light and holding hairspray like L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray.
FACE- To get her picture-perfect skin, opt for a foundation that reflects light to give you an airbrushed look, like Revlon’s Photoready Airbrush Mousse. Skip the claw nails (they were a don’t on my worst of 2012 list!), but try on a greyish-purple like Essie’s “Playa del Platinum”
EYES– Lately, Lana’s eyes have been the center of attention. To get her cat eye, first prep with a tinted base like Benefit’s Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner in “Butter Cream”. Then draw a thick cat-eye with liquid eyeliner (a pen like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner works wonders!) Add falsies (Ardell Fashion Lashes in 106 Black) and a few coats of mascara (I love Benefit’s BadGal Lash Mascara) and you’re set!
LIPS– Last but not least, you want Lana’s coveted pout. Start by enhancing the outline of your lips with a lip liner one shade darker than your lips, like Revlon’s ColorStay lip liner in “Nude 630”. Apply a peach lipstick (Revlon’s Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in “Smoked Peach”) and a lip plumper (Dior Addict Lip Maximizer High Volume Lip Plumper) on top for full lips.
