Dip-Dyed Hair

One of the hair trends that I’d love to try someday is colorful dip-dyed ends. I toyed around with dip-dye in the fall of 2011 when I ombre’d my own hair. The end result was blonde ends which gradually got darker as you went up to my light brown roots. I really liked the results (sorry, I don’t have any good photos!), but the dyeing ultimately ruined the ends of my hair and I had to chop the dyed part off.

I love this style because it’s just a hint of color. Sure it’s a bold and bright color, but it’s FUN! I realize that not everyone can pull off this look, but those who can should really try it. If you aren’t in a field with a strict dress code/image policy, you should start off using temporary dye. There are a lot of options, including hair chalk and color creams that wash out after one use. If you end up really liking the look, go to your colorist and take the plunge. Make sure you ask for a gradual gradient of color, otherwise there will be a fine line where your original hair color meets the bright color, and that looks tacky.

Here’s the look on some celebrities:

Is this a trend you would ever try?

  1. In theory I think this is super fun and edgy – in reality I could never pull it off… maybe on Halloween 🙂

  2. I’m not really a fan. Plus with short/dark hair, it won’t work for me. I tried an ombre look once and it looked awful on me! I will still with my dark red all over color 😉

  3. I tried this trend back in eighth grade and loved it back then, but I don’t think it is something I would do again. My affinity for having things match would probably get in the way.

  4. I am not at allll adventurous with my hair.  Its really brittle and gets damaged easily, so I blame that.. but if I was adventurous, I would try this just for fun 🙂

  5. I love the dip dye idea! I’d love to see your hair like that too!  I bet it looked really good (not that it doesn’t now, you have beautiful hair)!  My favorite is the blonde with the orangy dip dye – it’s so, so pretty!

  6. My best friend ombre’d her hair this past summer and it was super gorgeous, but it definitely fried the bottom 3-4 inches of her hair. Not worth it to me! I love the look of ombre with color but I don’t think it’s something I’d try. Super glamorous though!

    1. exactly! I’m still toying with the idea of doing it again when the weather gets warmer but not leaving the bleach on as long so it won’t fry my ends. We will see!

  7. I LOVE this trend, but unfortunately I think it doesn’t look as good on brunettes. I guess you have to have more contrast between the two colors to make it look right. Otherwise, it just looks like you had a “whoopsie” while you dyed your hair. I’m definitely a fan though.

  8. I’m actually totally torn on this trend! Part of me is like “omg SO sick of it” and another part of me is “hey, wouldn’t it be cool to dye the tips of my hair lavender?”

I think my job would be ok with it since I work in beauty and they’d like to see us experiment, but I think I’ll just stick to my blonde ombre for now.

  9. I love pink dip dyed hair. I would try it, but I don’t think I want to chance bleaching my hair just so the color could show up! It’s be a different story if I was blonde!

  10. OBSESSED.  I went from wanting pale pink hair to wanting to pale blue to wanting lavender to realizing, I am about to be a professional and rainbow hair is unacceptable. :((( so tragic hahaha

  11. I really wanted to try dip dye too but I was worried it would damage my hair and that work wouldn’t allow it.
