What Do Our Dreams Really Mean?

Dreams- we all have them. Some of us remember them in great detail, some of us forget them as soon as we wake up, and some of us (like me), have dreams that are so bizarre and disturbing that we wish we could forget them. Over the past 5 years or so, I’d say that my dreams have only gotten weirder. I’ve noticed over time that there a few recurring themes that pop up in my dreams at least once a week.

The concept of dreams themselves is pretty crazy to me, and my naturally curious mind leads me to Google dream analyzing websites to convince myself that I am not in fact crazy, just a quirky dreamer. Here are the three common themes that keep popping up in my dreams, along with what the internet tells me they mean.

Vomiting dreams

Yeah, even the word grosses me out. No one enjoys throwing up, obviously, so dreaming about it over and over is pretty disturbing. I don’t have any traumatic experiences with getting sick in public and I rarely throw up, so I’m not sure why it keeps happening in my dreams. While the experience in real life is pretty gross and uncomfortable, when it happens it my dreams it’s not that way at all. It’s me just opening my mouth and it coming out. In my dreams, the vomit is weird colors (like last week’s purple vomit), consists of weird things come out (like last month’s piece of plastic shapes) and it only happens to me- never others.

What does this mean? “To dream that you are vomiting indicates that you need to reject or discard an aspect of your life that is revolting. There are some emotions or concepts that you need to confront and then let go.” Uh, I can’t think of anything in my life that is “revolting” and needs to be rejected, but maybe I’m missing something?

Hiding dreams

I commonly have dreams- more like nightmares- where I’m hiding from someone or something. Whether it’s a murdered, someone robbing my home or some sort of weird monster, I’m always escaping and trying to hurriedly find hiding places. More times than not, I end up hiding in my closet in my own room and piling clothes on top of me so my body just looks like a lump of dirty laundry. Other times, I’m in unknown places trying to find the smallest hole or table to hide myself in/under as I sit there in fear.

What does this mean? “To dream that you are hiding suggests that you are keeping some secret or withholding some information. You may not be facing up to a situation or dealing with some issue. However, you may be getting ready to reveal something and confess before somebody finds out.” Hmm… again, I can think of a few small things that this might mean, but I don’t have any big or crazy secrets that I’m hiding.

Dreams where people are being mean to me

I constantly have dreams where people- whether they are my friends or complete strangers- are cruel to me. Examples include a teacher humiliating me in front of my entire class, my real-life friends talking about me right in front of my face as if I weren’t there, or a random former classmate ripping me apart for all my flaws. I wake up feeling upset, sad and confused each time, wondering why people would be so cruel for no reason.

What does this mean? “To dream that someone is being mean to you suggests that you are being too hard on yourself. You need to give yourself a break.” I think this is true- this is the only internet definition that makes sense to me.

What weird themes keep popping up in your dream? And what do they mean? I used this site to analyze mine.
