My 9-to-5 Job: Copywriter & Online Marketing Specialist

copywriter meme

I’m one of those people who actually enjoys hearing about what others do for a living. Usually it’s something very different than what I expected them to do or is a complete 180 from the type of work I do. I’ve mentioned a bit about what I do for a living here and there, but I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it from my readers (as well as people I meet in real life).

Since I graduated college (with a degree in Communications and Public Relations), I’ve been working at a small marketing agency about 20 minutes from my house. My proper title is Copywriter and Online Marketing Specialist. What’s that you ask? Well I’ll try to explain it.

People hear the term “copywriter” and instantly their mind goes towards Mad Men. Now I don’t happen to get that channel, so I’ve never been able to watch. But I do know that it takes place at an advertising agency and one of the characters is a copywriter. But I can assure you my job isn’t quite like that (or maybe it is?)

For the copywriting part of my job, I essentially write all the content for our clients. This includes press releases, blog posts, all the text on their webpages, the descriptions for the products on their websites, and much more. My clients range from local businesses to large clothing retailers, so I get to write about something different each and every day. For example, I’ve learned so much about home remodeling, gardening and fashion from writing content for my clients. I must say that it’s pretty cool to open a clothing catalog or browse a retailer’s website and see the things you wrote right there on the pages. Knowing that thousands of people are reading things I wrote is an awesome (and scary) feeling. Maybe they bought that specific product because they liked how it sounded- wouldn’t that be ideal?

For the online marketing part of my job, I work in the SEO field. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Without going into boring details, SEO is basically what makes your website rank higher on search engines. There is a lot of work that goes into making this happen, and I get to help take part in that by writing optimized copy (as mentioned above) and editing website’s content and photos. I also get to dabble in social media, promotion and some affiliate marketing.

So basically I get to write a lot of stuff that makes businesses and brands rank high on Google so more people can see them and then buy their product. Pretty cool, right? I’m shamelessly plug my Linkedin account on this post because I can. I’d love more connections- add me here.

So now tell me- what is it that you do for a living?

  1. You have a very interesting job, I only know about it because I loved my technical writing class in college and was close to my teacher that kinda did a similar job. But since I’m more of a techie and I had a better disposition to science I got a computer programming degree and now I work as an IT quality assurance/ Automation specialist. I basically, get the test our in-house software to make sure it works fine. The interesting part is that I write a program that tests the software like a human being would, but since it’s a program it’s 10 times faster. I hope this makes sense lol, I didn’t want it to get lengthy.

It’s always interesting the different perceptions people can have on a job they think they “know.” I enjoyed reading what it is you really do and how much you learn from it in the process! Is SEO something you learned in college, or picked up over time? It’s something I want to learn.

    Also, adding you on Linkedin!

    1. I actually knew nothing about it in college. I was hired for my communications background and writing skills and then learned everything about SEO at my current job! I’m hoping to do a little blogger course about it!

  18. It is always interesting to hear about what people do for a living! I’m a radiologist, so I interpret x-ray, CT, and MRI exams. 20. Your job sounds pretty interesting I must say, much more than mine! I am a Graphic Artist Representative. It’s very detail oriented, very tedious. Yuck. hahaha

  21. Loved reading more about what you do! I wish I knew more about SEO and would definitely love more tips from you in future posts!! It’s interesting how so many bloggers seem to do similar or related things in marketing, PR, social media, etc – it makes sense though! I work for a swiss bank as a financial advisor doing investment management, portfolio analysis and financial planning – totally unrelated to my blog!

  22. Fun post! Honestly, I never knew what a copyrighter’s work entailed. I’m glad you’re loving it. I’m an Operations Priority Specialist for a financial services firm. It sounds like an incredibly interesting job to have – well as far as learning about different brands goes, at least! I am studying literature and journalism at the moment in university and am thinking of a career in teaching High School English, but the creative in me would love to write articles and get published. I’m hoping there is a way for me to do both!
