The Best Waterproof Makeup

I know what you’re thinking- “Only high-maintenance girls wear makeup to the beach or pool”. But you’re wrong! While I usually go bare-faced when I’m laying on a beach chair in my backyard, there are times where I want a little flush of color on my cheeks or a swipe of mascara so I don’t look dead. Sue me.

Then there’s those occasions where you have to spend 12+ hours outside in the heat. Sweat and tears (or a mixture of both) happen frequently at summer outings and events, and most makeup doesn’t stand up to them. That’s where waterproof makeup comes into the picture. While I don’t believe in wearing a full face of makeup or false lashes to the beach, I do think it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a tinted moisturizer with SPF to cover your acne or apply a lip stain for a little color to impress the hot surfers on the beach. Am I right?

Here’s a no-fuss routine for nailing the waterproof beauty look.

If your complexion isn’t something to write home about, I can completely understand wanting to cover it up a little in public. Opt for a tinted moisturizer or CC cream with SPF (like Stila Bronzing Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 or AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation) to give your skin protection and coverage. This should cover up any major imperfections- if not, add a heavy-duty concealer to small spots only. The Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Concealer will cover up any blemish and is water-resistant.

We don’t all have a natural glow or tan, so adding a cream or liquid blush or bronzer gives the illusion of color. I love the Cargo Water Resistant Blush and Tarte Matte Waterproof Bronzer, which have staying power and come in a variety of summery shades.

If you really must wear a fancy eyeshadow to the beach (no, I’m not judging you), choose a cream-based product, like the Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream, which is available in every shade imaginable. Otherwise, just apply a long-lasting, waterproof formula mascara that won’t wash away after multiple swims. I love Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara, which is super affordable. Just remember that waterproof formulas are harder to remove, so stock some remover wipes in your beach bag.

Lastly, skip anything that is too heavy and try a tinted balm or stain instead. Many have SPF added right in and are easy to carry with you in your bag. The best I’ve found (and super affordable) is Banana Boat Aloe Vera with Vitamin E Sunscreen Lip Balm. The Hourglass Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss offers shine, color and holds up to water. If you’re a lipstick lover through and through, check out the Aqualillies For Tarte Glamazon™ Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick, which is made specifically to hold up for 12 hours in and out of the water. This coral shade is a limited edition, so hurry and buy it now!
