How to Define Your Eyebrows

If there’s one feature that can totally change the way you look, it’s your eyebrows. Brows that are too thick can resemble Helga Pataki (although she definitely rocked that unibrow), and brows that are too thin can make you look permanently surprised. While the super-high arched look seems to be in, I think a natural, full brow looks best on any face shape. I’ve even been using a lash and brow growing serum to hopefully help mine become a little thicker on the outer edges.

If your eyebrow hair is sparse from years of over-plucking, you might want to try a brow-growing serum, like the Revitabrow Brow Enhancing Serum. If growing them out isn’t an option, you’ll want to find a new fuller shape and use a brow stencil kit to get your desired shape (this is optional). You can use a brow powder (like Benefit Brow Zings), tinted brow gel (like Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow) or a simple brow pencil (like NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil) to fill them in. Choose a color that’s one shade lighter than your brows if you have dark brows, and one shade darker if you have lighter colored brows.

After filling them in, use a clear brow gel (or a spoolie with hairspray) to keep them in place. Invest in a good pair of tweezers (how fun are these animal-print tweezers?) to pluck strays as they pop up. A good pair of tweezers should last you for years, so take good care of them.

  1. I keep mine kind of thick, I don’t like to pluck them that much or have to fill them in. And you are definitely right, your eyebrows can totally change the way you look.

  2. good eyebrows and mascara make me feel 100% better about starting any day. Unfortunately, I’m a horrific eyebrow shaper so I get mine threaded about once (sometimes twice) a month depending on what I’m doing and how close my favorite eyebrow lady is. I just pluck any major issues that I can easily get without messing with things too much.

  3. I’m always afraid that I won’t fill them in properly and they will come out looking fake.. which is why I haven’t played around with any sort of eyebrow stuff at all. I think I need to take a day and just experiment!

  4. Yes yes yes YES! I love filling in my eyebrows. It is the one thing I make sure I do every day! I just don’t feel the same when they aren’t “on” haha. Keeping them in place with clear mascara or the a clear brow gel is super important too! I envy that girl’s brows in the photo, just beautiful!

  5. i am a big fan of the clear eyebrow gel. i’m afraid to use any filler colors because my brows are so light and i always think mine look weird with any added color! but i do get them waxed by a professional once a month which helps to keep them in line. 🙂

  6. great tips – i use hairspray to keep mine together 🙂 eyebrows are so important! i wish more people took the time to refine them..

  7. So I’d been using expensive brow powders & pencils, and then I found the Maybelline Master Shape pencil/spoolie combination and haven’t gone back! It’s just like the Anastasia brow wiz, but the pencil is waxier so it has some hold, too! (Also, it looks like it can’t be sharpened, but you can sharpen it in any sharpener and it lasts a long time!)

  8. I swear by BrowZings, there is NOTHING better. I do think it is pricey so right now I’m using the cheapy Elf one from Target and its truly not as good but when another coupon or Benefit sale comes around, I’m jumping on BrowZings again! 🙂

  9. Eyebrows are one thing I have not touched. No plucking or waxing. I’m pretty sure there is something I could do with them but I like it that it’s one thing I don’t feel the need to bother with so I’m leaving well enough alone. My mom and my sister both have permanent make up eyebrows.

  10. I totally agree with you! Part of my bridal beauty prep has been using the serum on my eyebrows. I used another brand, but so far it’s been working. They already look SO much better…it’s really surprising what a difference it makes in the way your face looks.

  11. My day won’t start well if my eyebrows are not in shape…haha! So I welcome posts about eyebrows anytime…..Anastacia products are the best!!

  12. OMG I can’t believe I didn’t know about this brow growing serum! I need it stat! I once was an over plucker and used to have great eyebrows back in college. I want them back. I am def going to be trying this out ASAP. Thank You, Thank you for this post! How has it worked for you so far?

  13. Hahaha! Helga. I have insanely unruly eyebrows so I appreciate all the tips. I go to Anastasia salon in Dallas and they are my brow life savers. I also use that serum you mentioned. It’s great. xoxoxo

  14. Lollll at the Helga part!! I agree, defined eyebrows really completely a look and make all the difference. Which is why I need to take care of mine haha! Thanks for sharing these tips and tricks:)

  15. You know…I never thought defining your eyebrows was important until I had my makeup done a few weeks ago. The lady really defined them with some type of shadow and they looks fantastic!
