My Dream Jobs: Part 1

dream job

If I could go back in time and choose a different major in college, I might have. Sure, I love communications and writing, but it’s one of the hardest fields to get a job in right now. While I do have a job in that field (sort of) and am very thankful for it, sometimes I wonder what life would be like if I had went to school to be a teacher like my junior-high-self wanted me to. Or what if I had taken singing lessons as a child- maybe I would be the next American Idol (JK guys, I can’t sing- who are we kidding?)

All of this talk about choosing the right major or how hard it is to get a job in your field just makes me think of all the dream jobs I wish I could have. I thought I’d share a few of them with you and listen to yours, as well.

kara dioguardi

Song writer for the stars

When I was younger, my friends and I would write songs. This was before we were interesting in boys, going out or reality TV, obviously. My friend Emily and I had a fake girl group that we wrote a song for in a tent in my backyard. How embarrassing. My friend Kerry and I (she was voted “Class Clown” in high school) used to write parodies of songs. We would make up funny raps and then prank call our friends or complete strangers. Real mature, I know. But all of these funny moments made me realize how genius of a songwriter I am. I can rhyme almost any word, I have a great vocabulary and I’m up on my current pop stars. Just think about it- how many songs do you hear on the radio and think “I could have written that”? A lot, right? Examples : Fergie’s “My Humps”, N*Sync’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” and any Nicki Minaj song.

vera wang

A fashion designer

When I was younger, I would fill notebooks up with drawings of girls in clothes. For some reason, I’ve always enjoyed drawing people, and obviously people need to wear clothes, so they went hand-in-hand. Once I got older, I started to love shopping and looking through catalogs. I think designing clothes and getting to see people wearing your creations- on the runway or in stores- would be so amazing.

candice victoria secret

A Victoria’s Secret angel

Here’s a confession: I love the Victoria’s Secret angels. No, not just anyone who wears the lingerie, I’m talking about the select few who are officially “angels” and walk in the annual show and make public appearances. This would be a dream job for a lot of obvious reasons: 1. They are bombshells. Who wouldn’t love to be that tall and skinny with big boobs and gorgeous hair? 2. They pose for pictures (and work out) for a living. 3. They get to date hot celebrities.. Enough said. Obviously I will never look like these women, but this post is called “dream jobs”.

jay z rolling stone

A music journalist

Back in high school, I loved going to shows with my friends to see our favorite bands. I used to want to write for Rolling Stone, Alternative Press or Blender. I loved writing and loved music and wanted to get to love both of them as a professional career. Unfortunately, the odds of getting a job in that field are almost impossible unless Daddy owns a record label or you’re sleeping with the editor. Back in middle school, I used to write music reviews for our school’s newspaper. So embarrassing- I don’t even want to continue talking about it.

say yes to the dress

A consultant on “Say Yes to the Dress”

I am a 24-year old female, so I obviously adore this show. Almost every girl/woman dreams about her wedding and loves fashion, and these two things are brought together on this TV series. I would love to be able to pick out dresses for people all day and make these brides-to-be happy and confident.

What are some of your “dream jobs”?

  1. I will add to that, just be a socialite, or have a job like Olivia Polermo (honestly I’m not sure what she does but she gets to wear amazing clothes and travel a lot), have a cooking show on the food network, work for a prestigious mag like Vogue I could go on an on with this, finally be a rapper I may not be able to sing but I can totally rap.

  2. Can my dream job be to just be wealthy and travel the world? Because I’m pretty sure I could get down with that. I would also have loved to be a clothing designer. I spent so much time as a child drawing clothes!

  3. this post is way too much fun! i’d also love to be a victoria’s secret angel but i’m pretty sure that’s not happening anytime soon. and like rachelle below, i’d love to do whatever it is olivia palermo does (and look like her too!) i’ve always wished i had a great voice so i could be a singer too. 🙂

I am glad that I chose to “follow my heart’ – LOL – and become a Performing Art Major. While I may not be where I want to yet, I am much happier than if I was doing anything else! 🙂

  5. I love this! I would write travel pieces and contribute to various magazines from time to time, getting free things sent to me. Holing up in my beachside place to write from time to time but attending great parties/events when I feel so inclined.

It’s actually what I am working towards with each new writing assignment I am hired for 🙂

I went to school for Philosophy and Public Policy with the intention to go to law school and that didn’t happen!

  6. Haha, I’d LOVE to be a Real Housewife!

PS I met Randy from Say Yes To Dress when I went dress shopping at Kleinfeld’s. Hate to say it since I adore him, but he picked out a peach(!) dress for me and it was horrid.

  7. I am right there with you…thinking of all the things I could have been or still dream of being…one is working for a style/fashion magazine or opening up my own boutique….neither of which will ever happen!! LOL!

  8. Aww, cool post. I think about this sometimes too. I always wanted to be an actress, until I was one. The reality and the dream are two very different things. I’m sure it’s great when you make it to the top of the game but it’s not getting there. I absolutely love what I’m doing now and think there’s no better fit.

  9. I think about my “dream jobs” all the time! They’re things like being a florist, an equestrian, or a gift shop/bed and breakfast owner in a touristy town (ha!).

  10. You already have VS angel hair! And yes Adam Levine is certainly motivation 🙂 While my finance job actually pays the bills, in my dream world … I’ve wanted to just be a personal shopper at bergdorfs, a stay-at-home puppy mom and a luxury hotel reviewer.

  11. I would love to own my own business one day, but we’ll see how that pans out! Also, a VS model wouldn’t be such a bad gig either…haha

  12. Awesome dream jobs! I would love to be a fashion designer too. I’m in the communications field also and it is super hard right now but keep going for the experience and that dream job will come

  13. yessss – you hit the nail on the head! all those jobs are pretty spectacular. and confession: my sister and i used to write songs and sing them in front of our family – obviously that didn’t turn out so well for me 🙂

  14. This post seriously made me laugh out loud because I love every single one of your dream jobs. I pretty much feel like I’m a consultant for “Say Yes to the Dress” because I talk to my TV telling those girls, “NO. Just no.” Haha, but really my dream job would be a host on “Fashion Police” because Joan is hilarious and it just seems like a lot of fun. Either that or just work for E! in general. I’m kind of obsessed with that channel.

  15. haha I love this post – I have been thinking about that age old question, “what do I want to be when I grow up” a lot lately… in my dreams, I would love to be a professional organizer!

  16. Lol I love the housewife one. I used to totally want to be an animal trainer… like the ones that get to cuddle penguins and stuff.

  17. Oh goodness I think about this all too often haha! I would LOVE to be a consultant on Say Yes to the Dress. I love anything wedding related. I also love anything that requires travel so I guess if I could be anything, I would be a travelling international photographer. What for? Who knows….weddings, magazines, etc. I just think that would be the epitome of awesome.

  18. I decided a few years ago that it would be amazing to be the person who creates soundtracks for films. Like. Why isn’t that my job? What am I doing with my life?!

  19. I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was little! These days, if I could get paid to workout, shop, and play with dogs, I would be in heaven!

  20. It goes against my personality like oil and water, but being a housewife, I’m all for it. I love to cook so I’d do that a lot, and volunteering at places. I’d love it!
