Sunscreen For Your Hair & Scalp
Summer is right around the corner here in the Northeast, so it’s officially time to start loading up on sunscreen. Last year’s bottles are probably empty or expired (now’s the time to check!) One often overlooked area to apply sun protection is your hair and scalp. My naturally light brown hair turns into a more dirty blonde shade in the summer solely from spending time in the sun. I like the seasonal change in color, but I also make sure that the color change doesn’t roll over into a texture or quality change.
If your hair is brittle, dry or parched during summer, it could be from lots of UV exposure. Luckily a few beauty brands have come out with magic products- sunscreen for your hair- to help alleviate this problem. Most come in spray formulas and should be applied prior to going out in the sun. Others are shampoos that have ingredients to help prevent fading from potential and current UV rays.
And please, please, please don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your scalp/part line, especially if you are prone to burning or have a rather wide hair part. I’ve seen so many friends/random women and men who get really bad sunburns on their scalp and it’s not cute. Or fun. Brushing your hair becomes a torturous task and your hairline and scalp are places where melanoma and other skin cancers often pop up. I’m not telling you to slather on sunscreen all over your head, but just pay a little extra attention (Neutrogena’s Baby Sunblock Stick below is the perfect size for your hairline/part).

I need to grab one of these I will be at the beach this weekend. Great post Rachel.
I was once the victim of a terrible scalp burn and let me tell ya, it wasn’t pretty. I never thought of using a stick up there. I will definitely be picking one of these up for the lake this weekend!
This is SUCH a good idea! I HATE scalp burns!
My scalp always seems to burn at the beach, even when I comb my hair without a part. I need that sunblock stick!
This is genius! I try to avoid having a part when I’m out and have my hair up, but I almost always forget about it and end up with a burnt scalp– SO painful!
If I go outside without sunscreen I will turn into a lobster and sea-spray hair products save me!
Oh nice, I need to check this stuff out! And yes, no matter how careful I am I always seem to burn my part, ouch!
This is an awesome reminder. I feel like it’s something I always forget! Since my hair was so short last summer, I did a lot of headscarves so I didn’t really have to worry about it.
That’s another good idea!
I always tend to forget about putting sunscreen on my scalp! I do try to wear hats when I’m on the beach but I should totally get myself some hair/scalp sunscreen.
Suncreen for your hair and scalp is so important. I have dry hair and need to extra protection! Great tips!
Excellent tip I so often forget- how silly to be applying SPF 50 to my face for an afternoon outside, and neglecting my scalp/hair/hairline?
I love the Bamboo UV+ shampoo and conditioner! They’re among my all time favorites at this point! I’ve been dying to try the Aveda spray, too! I just love Aveda products so much!
ive never thought of the idea of a scalp/hair protector until recently. I love these suggestions
